Made with Salt (or Salt Memories) draws on previous works by Salzmann documenting salt residue in Avalon, Philadelphia and the salt ponds in Maras, Peru.

With “Made with Salt,” Salzmann continues his long exploration of salt as both material and metaphor. In the earliest days of photography, salt was essential: salt crystals made it possible to capture light and preserve images on paper. Long before that, salt itself was a source of power and wealth — valued as currency, traded across continents, and used to pay taxes to rulers. Salzmann’s own ancestors collected such taxes for the Tsar, often paid in salt. From this history comes the family name Salzmann — literally, “man of salt.”

The 20/20 Photo Festival is a celebration of photography that brings together the Philadelphia photo community through city-wide exhibitions, educational programming, and a photo book fair. Originally organized in 2020 by representatives from Gravy Studio, The Halide Project, and Wanderlife Gallery, the festival has built a strong reputation from its inaugural year as a month-long virtual event to its current in-person manifestation.

In 2025, the 20/20 Photo Festival will be promoting photography exhibits around Philadelphia for the month of September along with a main week of events from Thursday September 4th to Thursday September 11th, 2025 at different locations including Kieran Timberlake, The Halide Project, Cherry Street Pier, The Crane Arts Building and Unique Photo.
